The Chinese Yang Yang, turning thirty next August 24, presents herself in Torino 2006 with a collection of prizes that would make any champion turn pale. If one were to look at the long and rich curriculum of declarations made by Yang, her opponents could easily avoid competing. This is a clearly desired exaggeration, determined however by the impressive number of victories obtained by the Asian representative. In fact at the World Championships, from 1997 to 2002, she reached the finals 22 times out of 24 participations, winning 15 of those. At the 2002 Olympic Winter Games she replicated the silver medal of four years earlier, always in the relay, adding 2 fantastic gold medals in the 500 and in the 1000 m (the first for China in all the history of the Olympic Winter Games); in the World Cup at season end she was always at the top of any speciality and furthermore she set the absolute record of 123 points twice (the second best result, 105 points, and the third is at 84 points).
We are dealing with one of the strongest speed skaters of all times. Generally near her surname an (A) is indicated to differentiate her from a fellow athlete with the same name. In her name, which means literally “flying flag”, her fate has already been written. She joined the national team in 1995, but in 1996 the hyper-training yielded bad results. In 1997, with the help of her friend Lu Chen a figure skater, she found her self-confidence once again and since then she has become one of the top names in the world short track panorama. It can be clearly noted that in the last seasons she has had a decline in her performance and consequently in victories. However, if one thinks about the 2003 World Championships she took home 2 gold medals and in 2005 the 500m record, maybe she should be deemed up to the situation.
In the four legs of the World Cup at the end of 2005, she is ranked second overall in the 1500m, while she is definitely away from the best on the other distances. Her rivals hope that Yang is now satisfied and tired of winning, so as to eliminate an uncomfortable customer for the title. However in special competitions, such as the Olympic ones, technique and experience can make the difference, gifts which are not lacking in the great Chinese champion. The very young Koreans Chun-Sa Byun and Sun-Yu Jin, who are proving to be in a fantastic shape and are ready for the highlight of the season, but especially Yang’s compatriot, Meng Wang, winner of the last international competitions, know perfectly well that the final calculations must only be done at the end and never without the “gold cannibal” Yang Yang.
