译文：元世祖至元十九年十二月初八日，元世祖召唤文天祥到宫殿中。文天祥见了皇帝只拱手作揖而不跪拜。皇帝的侍臣强迫他，他仍然坚定地站立着，不被他们所动摇。他极力述说宋朝没有不循正道的国君，没有需要抚慰的人民；不幸谢太后年老而宋恭帝幼小，掌权的奸臣误害了国家，用人、行政，措施不当，你们元人利用我朝的叛将、叛臣，攻入我朝的国都，毁灭我朝的国家。我文天祥在大宋危急而力图恢复兴盛的时候辅佐宋朝，宋朝灭亡了，我文天祥应当尽快就死，不应长久苟且偷生。
元世祖派人告诉他说：“你用侍奉宋朝的忠心来侍奉我，就任用你当中书省宰相。”文天祥说：“我文天祥是宋朝的状元宰相，宋朝灭亡了，只能死，不能偷生，希望一死就够了。”元世祖又派人告诉他说：“你不做宰相，就做枢密使。”文天祥回答说：“除了一死以外，没有什么事可做了。”元世祖就命令他退下。
